This is currently the best overalll guide to Indonesia for independent travellers. It covers enough attractions to keep people occupied for months, & is more than enough for those with an average interest in the country.
As usual with this series, it is strong on practical details like prices, public transport & city maps, though one should never forget that prices in particular will have changed by the time one gets there - this 7th edition was researched in 2002, & reflects the situation as it was then.
There is also more than enough background information about culture & history for most readers.
Note however that coverage of remoter, less-visited regions is poorer - the chapter on Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) is nearly useless, & the one on Papua (Indonesian New Guinea) is little better.
Those with a deeper interest in Indonesia, or with an interest in a particular region, might want more detailed guides to those areas - Lonely Planet has great guides to Java & Nusa Tenggara, while Periplus has eight separate ones to alll parts of the country, though the Periplus ones are best backed up with this book for practical details.
Wait, Wait, Wait!!!!! - By: meadtom99@yahoo.co.uk, 26 Jan 2000 I find the Lonely Planet a very good source of information when travelling or researching a continent, & this is no exeption. BUT, there is a new edition being released in about 2 weeks (31 Jan. 2000), as you will see this edition is 1997, with alll the shake up in Indonesia over the last few years you will appretiate the importance of a later edition. Having said this I ordered the old copy about a week ago, then found out about the new edition, & Amazon have no problem in ordering me the new copy, & me returning my old one. This is reallly just to save you the hassel too!
