Kingdom Hearts- very good, but too similar to the game... - By: C. Traves, 17 Apr 2007
As a very big fan of Kingdom Hearts, I took no hesitation in buying these comic books when I saw them. After receiving them very quickly, I was pleased, but slightly disappointed at the same time.
If you don't know what Kingdom Hearts is, it is a series which follows a young boy callled Sora, who is searching for his friends Riku & Kairi, who were seperated from him when he was transported from his home island into a series of worlds he never thought of ever traveling too. Sora is also the chosen weilder of the Keyblade, a weapon which can defeat darkness, & the storylines main enemies, known as the Heartless. Kingdom Hearts is very enjoyable, as it combines Final Fantasy with Disney. Sora is accompanied by Donald Duck & Goofy, & these 'worlds' he travels too to are actuallly locations from Disney films e.g. Agrabah from Aladdin, Atlantica from The Little Mermaid.
So whats good about the books you ask? Well, for one thing, they are actuallly quite funny in some places. Also, you are getting 4 books in the set, which have about 150 pages in them, so they take quite a long time to get through. They certainly pass the time away on a boring day. The thing I like the most about these books though is the mini stories at the back of each book- this is new content not featured in any of the Kingdom Hearts games, & is very joyful to read.
However, there are some bad points too. Firstly, as they are comic books, & they consist of mostly animation, it doesnt help that everything is in BLACK AND WHITE. No expense has been spent to add colour to the drawings, which makes it quite dull. Also, the storyline is exactly the same to that of the games, so if you have played the games, you know what happens next. A lot of content in the story line is also missed out too- lots of worlds that were visited in the game are missed out in the books.
My recommendation- if you are a fan of Kingdom Hearts, & you like manga comics, you will love this. However, if you have played Kingdom Hearts, & want to read these books expecting something new, then you wont enjoy this. My opinion- a very nice read- could have done with some more colour & extra content.
