I studied Pashto full-time for six months & went to Afghanistan in 2002. At that time the only Pashto books around in the UK were either written in the 19th century or were based on the Pashto spoken in Pakistan (where there are some 8 million speakers). Until December 2006 when this book came on the market there were still few others.
As the synopsis states, this was written for American soldiers & civilians going to Afghanistan. What I like about it is that in one section there is a picture, the Pashto script, the English translation & a good transliteration which having studied the language I can see how it works. This would suit both those who have no knowledge of the language as well as those who have studied it.
I have rated this 4 stars because I have spotted a number of 'typos' & I wonder whether it was actuallly proof read by anyone who speaks the language. I am currently communicating with the publishers to correct this.
For anyone with the slightest interest in Pashto this is definitely worth buying, but look around for a better price.
