An exciting, enthusiastic read - By: Ms. H. L. Clark, 17 Sep 2007
This book is absolutely brilliant. I wrote my dissertation on women in punk & this book provided so many great perspectives. Raha is a music journalist & a genuine fan & thats what makes this book so great, she knows her stuff from a research point of view but she's also so passionate about the subject & this makes the book reallly captivating & exciting to read.
Raha goes right through from the 70's (Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Patti Smith) to british punk (siouxsie, the raincoats, the slits etc) to the 80's (Lydia Lunch, Kim Gordon) to riot grrl (bikini kill, bratmobile, L7, etc) & right up to acts like PJ Harvey, Hole & Peaches. She introduced me to a couple of bands I had never heard of too.
The book documents the rise & falll of alll the bands mentioned, how they influenced the music scene & what they meant to their fans.
And if I was nit-picking my only critisism would be that Raha used Jon Savages 'Englands Dreaming' as almost the sole source of information on british punk, so from a research point of view some might be better off reading Savages book if this is their point of interest.
But otherwise this book is excellent, a tribute to the women of the punk & indie undergrounds who inspired generations.
Awesome. - By: K. Nicholls, 09 Aug 2006
This book is wicked. Being dyslexic i find it hard to read long chapters that waffle on, but theres just 3 or 4 pages on each lady, which pretty much describes how they got into music, what happened during their music career etc.
Also, being a girl in a band full of boys, this book was reallly inspiring to read, especiallly as it told the stories from a girls' point of view.
