Enchanting rendition of a bygone age - By: , 09 Apr 2003
Meticulously researched & brilliantly rendered account of Imperial rivalry between Russia & Britain in the 19th century over control of Asia & the northern passages to India.
Nor does the author neglect to highlight the human cost paid by those who were subjects & victims of this struggle.
A must-read for anyone who wants to understand the conflicts today in central asia. I certainly hope the author will issue an updated edition in the near future now that sealed Russian archives have become (I assume) more accessible.
Splendid account of Central Asian History - By: , 01 Aug 1999
I read this book in a week, despite its 500 pages. It is truly grapping & you won't put it down. I wish more people read the book & knew such a rich history of Central Asia. The author did a great job painting the big picture that accounts to what is happening in Central Asia now. Must read for everyone interested in history & politics
A fantastic book written by a very gifted author. - By: , 19 May 1999
Add this book to your must read list. It lends clarity & perspective to so many recent events in Central Asia, you'll wish you'd read it sooner.
Outstanding treatment of history - By: , 17 Apr 1999
This is the best history book I've ever read (a close second is Friedman's 'From Beirut to Jerusalem')- assuming history is about politics. This is the way history should be written (and taught). I couldn't put it down & it has become something of a cult book for me.
A brilliant account of an earlier "Cold War." - By: , 11 Apr 1999
This is a terrific book, a story of military strategy & intrigue that is complex yet remarkably easy to follow. Cold War buffs will learn that 1945-1989 was an echo of the Great Game. The book put a lot of the 20th century into context. The characters are richly defined, the research thorough. You won't regret it.
