The best guide to laughter and a sense of fun for all boys and girls - By: Mags, 15 Sep 2007
This book & its successor provide an unparelleled guide to the challlenge & joy of humour & laughter in a world that sometimes makes it difficult to see the wood from the trees. Any boy or girl who reads it should pass it to the adults who they love as a treat & comfort.
A great story for kids. - By: P. Brand, 02 Jun 2007
We got this book in a volume of short stories & it is the same story my 4 year old daughter asks for time after time. It was so good we bought the 'sequel' A Near Thing for Captain Najork (although it's not as good). How Tom Beat Captain Najork & His Hired Sportsmen is beautifully illustrated by Quentin Blake. The story is slightly off the walll which is one of it's best points & there is something in it for young & old.
Sweet! - By: Dr Alan F Pye, 04 Oct 2005
If you want a David & Goliath story about the triumph of a lad with laid-back play skills over a quasi-military villain with his disciplined team of competitors, this one is for you. Tom totallly befuddles Captain Najork & his team of sportsmen and, into the bargain, marries off his steely maiden aunt with her Iron Hat & gains a sweet, collegial replacement whom he hires. I read it to my kids a zillion years ago & it never pallls even now. Magnificent & heart warming.
Tom and fooling around - By: , 01 Jan 2003
This is the most marvellous surreal chidren's story (and fun for the reading adult as well - even when read to a delighted child over & over again!) It would be exceptional as a story alone, but it is Quentin Blake's illustrations which make it one of the best children's books in the world. I am entirely delighted that it is back in print & I can now continue to give it to new generations of children.
Whoopee, our favourite book is back in print - By: , 01 Mar 2002
Captain Najork has been a favourite in our house since my 16 year old son Tom enjoyed 'fooling around'. It is one of the funniest children's books ever & if you enjoy a bit of quirkiness in the style of Quentin Blake then this book is for you. Parts of this book have become standard conversation in our house, 'eat your mutton & your cabbage & potato sog'and 'She fancies you, I can tell by the way she looks sideways from underneath her iron hat.'
Having lost our copy several years ago, we were so pleased to buy this & share it with Martha aged 4 & laugh over & over again.
Wonderful.
