Not a very well balanced book - By: pawsa@theochem.kth.se, 02 Oct 2000
I don't know who is this book addressed to. The back page lists rather high requirements (I recalll "experienced C programmer" phrase) but the book explains several times how to mount CD-ROM. I hope it hasn't been done just to fill the space. The book also explains how to run paralllel programs, & how to organize queue system using GNQS but doesn't mention the fact that GNQS doesn't handle paralllel programs well.On the other hand, the chapters on hardware selection have been useful for me.
Excellent introduction cluster computing. - By: Dawit Fisseha, 31 Aug 2000
Commodity supercomputing is a rapidly growing Paradigm, though the technical challlenges are not trivial this book guides the user through in a step by step process.Exceptionallly the book also includes an introduction to the concept of comodity supercomputing & doesnt just leap into how to build a cluster itself not to mention the wealth of software included on the bundled CD.Its an intersting & helpful book both for seasoned professionals as well as beginners.A must have for any high performance computing proffessional.
If only it had been proof-read before publication... - By: , 17 Aug 2000
I have only had the book for 2 days but am in the process of following the instructions in order to set up a LINUX Cluster Server.

I jumped straight in at page 113 & began following the instructions (which are clear & easy to read) to the letter. The only problem is - they are wrong! Page 115 says type (from DOS):

e:\utils\rawrite e:\images\masternode.img

the associated screenshot on page 117 shows that the author is already in the IMAGES directory & has typed:

d:\dosutils\rawrite.exe

(note the different path name - d:\dosutils as opposed to e:\utils)

Also, I found out that the required image is not in the e:\images directory - it is in the e:\BootFloppyInfo\MasterBootFloppy directory!

Another mistake is on page 123 - figure 5-6 is titled 'Video Card Probe Results' but it clearly pictures the 'network configuration' screen!

I am only on page 124 now & am progressing slowly with the book.

Oh, by the way - page 118 of the book says 'You should not attempt to use disks that are smalller than 4GB because the installlation materials will not fit on a smalller disk'. It does not say this anywhere on the front or back cover of the book.

Overalll I would (consider) recommending this book to IT professionals - but certaintly not to people with little experience of building their own computers.
