A must read for all Adult Children - By: , 18 Oct 2005
First I read Adult Children: Secrets of Dysfunctional Families. A great book to read everytime you feel "different" from the rest of the world! And then came this book: having completed my intensive 1-week psychotherapy for A.Children, & not having read any books on the adult child isssue before, I found this book to be precise, straight forward & realistic.
This book easily explains the origins & repeated patterns of adult child behaviour, processes that may have led to addictions (alcohol, work, food & other), & the essential personal work to lead one to the root of the problem. I certainly found this book helpful towards the road to recovery.
practical help in an easy-to-read format - By: ILONACAT, 24 Jun 2005
Knowing you grew up in a dysfunctional family does not necessarily mean you know how to deal with it when you are grown up. Knowing they are manipulative doesn't necessarily help you to defend yourself against their manipulativeness. This book very helpfully identifies some behaviours that are both common & unhealthy-then shows you, equallly helpfully, what to do about them. It's reassuring on another level too-you realize that the craziness you grew up with is someone else's, not yours, & that you can live differently. It IS a bit American self-helpy, but still worth it.And it's set out in such a way that you can use it for quick reference.
This book is a "bible" - By: , 31 Jan 2004
Anyone at alll, who has come so far as to recognise the term "adult child", will find this book invaluable. It does, quite simply, what it says on the cover. I refer to it constantly. Frankly, I wish everyone had a copy; the world would be a happier place! It doesn't cover every situation - there's room for a part 2 here, I feel - & it suffers from cutesy American self-help-itis in places. It is well worth putting up with that, though. Recommended. It will save you endless heartache.

Finallly! A book that gives us what to do right instaed of just what's wrong. As a counselor I highly recommend it to anyone who has had any kind of dysfunction in their family.
If you've got any issues...read this! - By: , 19 Apr 1998
+AH4-This is probably the only self-help book I have read & loved & gone back to over & over again. It helps you recognize & identify your issues...or helps you realize you reallly don't have any. If you have felt like your relationships haven't been alll that normal or that your family environment wasn't that healthy... this might help you.+AH4-
