Interesting material but not survival oriented - By: , 21 Jan 1999
An interesting book on how to live in the wilderness, but the book does not place enough emphasis on the survival mentality. For instance, the sections on fire & water, which echo information that can be found in any respectable survival manual, are very useful, while the sections on shelter & food contain methods which are too elaborate & time/energy consuming to be useful to anyone in an actual survival situation. The book also lacks any information on the main goal of survival: GETTING OUT ALIVE. A section on signaling & navigation would reallly improve the book's value as a survival text.
Not very useful! - By: , 04 Jan 1999
This book reallly isn't very useful, especiallly for anyone living outside the southwestern desert. Mr. Olsen wrote the outdoor survival merit badge requirements for the boy scouts, & this is indicative of how the book reads. Most of the information is nice to know & even interesting at times, but it gets silly at points & is more historical in nature than anything. This book might be a good read for those interested in how people survived off the land in the distant past, but offers nothing in terms of modern survival skills. I believe that anyone interested in actuallly surviving in the wilderness would be better off looking elsewhere. I was disappointed.
A very good survival book. - By: , 07 Nov 1998
If you are strapped naked in the wild & ten thousand miles away from civilization, Larry's book will show you how to survive with the tools that mother nature has given us. Good pictures & layout. A great piece of work. I highly recommend it.
what you need to know and some about outdoors/ great book - By: , 29 Oct 1998
this book is definately five stars. It taught me everything that i needed to do to survive in the outdoors. The most interesting thing that i found were the snares & traps which they gave you sketches of to see how they did it. I have tested some of these things in this book & they work very well. another interesting thing was the plant list in the back of the book which told you if the plant was medicine or food or could be used as a tool. This book was a very helpful book to me.
Here began the primitive skill movement. - By: , 20 Jan 1998
Years ago, long before I became an outdoors columnist/writer, I read Outdoor Survival Skills on a lark. To say that it changed my life would be an understatement; it showed me the road my life would take.
In one smalll book, Larry started a movement that did what the hippies couldn't do. It showed people how to truly use the natural resources that surround us alll, from how to tan hides & make snares to weaving tree bark & building shelters. Best of alll, it shows us how to do alll of these things without spending a dime--as it was done in days gone by.
As a teacher, Larry is the best & the rest of us owe what we have to him. If you have any interest in how things were done before there was a Wal-Mart at every corner, get this book! I cannot say enough about it.
