Essential reading - By: Holf, 27 Aug 2002
I cannot recommend this book highly enough for anybody wanting to know more about networking. A wide range of networking technologies, from the past, present & probable future, are covered. And these are presented both in a technical & historical context - that is to say there is lots of information on how these technologies came about & the various players & regulatory bodies involved. The explanations are always clear & relevant. The wry humour throughout lightens the mood & the question / answer format is uncanny in that it has often taken the words out of my mouth.

I would not say Networking Explained is necessarily a good book for somebody completely new to IT / computers / telecoms / networking. But if you've been in the business for more than six months or so in a fairly technical environment, this book will be gold dust to you.

As well as a good cover to cover read, it is also a great reference to dive into on specific topics. It will stay on my shelf as a first port of calll for many years to come.

I can't thank the authors enough for such a meticulous labour of love.

Ideal guide for both technical and non-technical users... - By: , 14 Apr 1999
This is a well written book that covers from the most basic to most complex network issues. Whether you want to know how cable modems work, or what the exact pinouts for EIA-232 DB-9 or DB-25 connections are, it is in there.

I also appreciate the humor (for example, Q: If you were to use on word to describe the physical later what would it be? A: Wire. Or if you are from the state of Texas (U.S.A.), it's callled "wharr.") & many drawings the book has.

Networking Explained has much appeal to a sales person as it does the network admin.
