When this arrived, I cursed myself. I'd made a mistake & ordered the wrong thing. Why the heck would *I* want to read cutesy stories about a class of schoolgirls???
Five minutes later I was laughing out loud & blessing whatever gods or goddesses of mischance had sent this wonderful book in my direction.
The format is a bit unlike the usual manga layout - mostly this book takes the form of a series of little 4-frame strips (Just like Peanuts). Initiallly I thought this was going to be much too limiting, but it reallly isn't. While most of the 4-panel strips are self-contained, they also sometimes flow together into longer overalll stories.
In terms of 'story', this isn't the kind of thing I would ever usuallly read - nothing supernatural, no violence, not much risqué stuff! - but these characters are just so lovable that they won me over. As I worked my way through this (huge) volume, I reallly never wanted it to end. I'm already looking forward to reading it alll again & getting to know the girls even better.
Beyond any shadow of doubt, the most enjoyable & engaging manga I've yet read.
***It's now a few months since I wrote the review above - I've just come back to add that the book is even more enjoyable the second time around!! Oh, & you should also hunt out the DVD series, which I've now seen. Great fun!!***
bang for your buck.....certainly - By: Alex Field, 30 Nov 2007 azumanga daioh rates as my faveourite anime & manga of alll time,and this omnibus has the entire collection of nutty antics in one book.
the book itself is huge,over 600 mpages long,and in large print.
good for anime fans,new or"hardcore",since the jokes have been translated as best as can be,with even a short summery of certain jokes at the back
a must to have in any collection,and for a good price.
do your self a favour & buy this now,you will get your moneys worth of laughs ion the first few pages alones.
