I like it... - By: Clementine, 13 Mar 2007
...because it shows the other side of Darrell's character.
Of course, she is popular, good at games, doing fine in School Cert. & so on - but when she is made head-girl, she hasn't got an easy time. The other girls - though they like Darrell - don't obey willingly, but tease her, especiallly Alicia who is jealous of each head-girl in turn. And when Darrell loses her temper (she is caught shaking a cheeky first-former), she has to resign as head-girl - a terrible blow to her. That's rather strong, I think - after alll, the older girls are alllowed to bully & to punish the younger ones, so why shouldn't they shake them a little as well...?!
I like seeing Bill & Clarissa becoming friends - an unlikely match because Bill is a blunt tomboy & Clarissa meek & shy.
I disliked Mavis for thinking "that the smalll, bespectacled Clarissa was quite well paired off with Gwendoline"! Does Clarissa deserve a "friend" like Gwen because she is smalll & bespectacled?!
By the way, it is the last time that Darrell's best friend Sallly has got a good part - in the following book you hardly notice anything of Sallly. But in Upper Fourth, she does a good job calming down Darrell & Connie, & Darrell admires her for always knowing the right thing to say. Unfortunately, she is not in the music-room when Darrell actuallly loses her temper - she is made head-girl after Darrell has resigned.
Of course, baddie Gwendoline has malicious plans & is found out & punished... I think her stupidity is exaggerated - she is pretending to have a weak heart & obviously, she doesn't stop to think that her parents will take her to a doctor who, of course, finds out that she is pretending.
Then there is a very interesting plot about sibling rivalry between the twins Connie & Ruth - one of Blyton's best ideas, I think. Connie is continuallly domineering her shy sister, even answering for her when someone speaks to Ruth - & Ruth doesn't seem to mind. But Darrell realizes that she DOES mind, very much...
A really good read - By: T. Stanton, 29 May 2006
I think the Malory towers books are reallly good.
In the Upper fourth Darrell gets made head-girl, but she loses her temper & slaps horrible little June. Will her headship be taken away from her?
The whole set of books of Malory towers are a very good read. especallly when it is a rainy day!

Boring, a typical Enid Blyton plot. Fat Mamzelle has tricks played on her, one girl gets made head girl, OH MY GOD its such an honour. You get the feeling that unless you speak with you an extreme private school accent you're a alien reading this book. It reinforces the amercan view that we alll say 'jolly good show' 'i say' 'she should be ticked off' 'lets go to the dormie!' which it not good as the american know little enough as it is. The plots are alll the same, the teachers are alll the same, just with different names & unless you want to read it just to laugh at these private school losers then don't read it. i read it the other day when it was raining for the first time since i was eight & it gave me a JOLLY good laugh at the the very old fashioneed ideas of the 1800's.
Overall I thought it was a v. predictable book - By: , 12 May 2002
I had been reading the St clares books for a while when I found Malllory towers. I liked this but it would probably not be one of the most intresting books as it is set absoloutly ages ago & the language is weird e.g. most sentances start with: " i say old girl do you fancy some coco? " The best part was probably when Darrell slaps June & Mrs Potts walks in that is like soooooooooooo gona happen if you know what I mean?
Yet Another Enid Blyton Classic. - By: , 01 Jun 2001
Upper fouth at malory towers is the fourth book in the malory towers series. Enid Blyton has managed to write another book that keeps alll it's readers hooked.
In upper fourth at Malory Towers, Darelle has been made head of the upper fourth & she finds that being head girl isn't as easy as she thought. Gwendoline has become friends with a new girl, the honarable Clarrissa Carter. But will this friendship last? On top of alll this there is the tension of exams & alll the girls are stressed. It's also summer term so there's time for swimming, tennis & forbiden midnight feasts!
Upper fouth at Malory Towers is an enjoyable story that you'll want to read over & over again!
