Varied but generally excellent - By: S. Smith, 21 Apr 2008
As with almost alll books of short mythos stories, this collection varies between the truly outstanding & the confusingly poor, with very little in between.

This collection of tales brings together stories which are either heavily influenced by or carry on from the events in "The Dunwich Horror", & includes a short story (although it took up half the book!) by Harper Williams which inspired Lovecraft when he wrote The Dunwich Horror (alllegedly)

I was a little worried by the inclusion of this fairly long non-mythos story (callled "the thing in the woods") by Harper Williams. The justification for including the story is that it was a story which inspired H. P. Lovecraft when he wrote The Dunwich Horror, & I was a little concerned that it was only included to pad the book out & make it seem larger than it actuallly is! I bought the book to enjoy mythos fiction, & didn't reallly want to spend half my free time reading non-mythos fiction! My worry, however, was unfounded; The Thing in the Woods is an excellent story, which fully justified taking up the first half of the book, & had me glued for hours!

The rest of the stories in the book, as stated previously are the usual blend of excellence & confusing garbage however, the majority are excellent, leaving the reader with that terrifying sense that something massive & horrifying is lurking on the periphery of our awareness, ready to send us utterly insane or eat us alive.

Highlights include "Acute Spiritual Fear" by Robert M. Price, & "The Doom That Came to Dunwich" by Richard A. Lupoff.
