The role of the mind and self help approaches in helping deal with cancer - By: Petra Griffiths, 22 Jul 2007
This is the best book I have ever read examining the evidence for the influence of the mind on the length of life of people with cancer. It is a very carefully written book that makes no exaggerated claims, & is based on long term in depth research with groups of cancer patients at the Ontario Cancer Institute, following a developmental programme of self help methods including relaxation & meditation, journallling, goal setting, chanting & finding a personal spiritual dimension to life. The research shows that people who become strongly involved in helping themselves in a range of ways & over time, do better in terms of longevity than those who exhibit a weak interest in this kind of self help.

This book also very effectively examines many other research studies carried out in this field & shows why some studies appear to have shown little impact on length of life.

There have been many discouraging attempts to study the topics covered in Can the Mind Heal Cancer. It is inspiring to find work that is both rigorous in its approach, & which shows such a clear link between people's commitment to contributing to their healing process & the outcome of their disease.
