Not what it promises to be. - By: , 15 Nov 2003
The people who decided to include the words "From the Beach to the Boardroom" in the books title should be sued for false advertising. This book is aimed solely at the smart business end of style. Its contents include the benefits of bespoke suits & shirts; how to spot a well crafted tie; how to tie a bow tie; when you should wear an ascot & some basic historical trivia regarding the origins of the windsor knot for example. The word 'beach' is not mentioned once & the area of casual clothing is completely ignored. If you want to find out how to dress 'dapper' & look incredibly smart when attending your next business meeting then this could be useful. If you want an alll-round guide to style including what to wear on the street (or beach) then this book is completely useless.
Outdated, lacking in examples and dull - By: , 07 Jan 2003
I've bought a couple of similar books on this topic having accepted that I could do with some extra help on the style & wardrobe front. I hate to disagree with the other reviewers, but I thought this book was dull & not much help. It badly needs more pictures & examples of stlyes to help the turgid text along. It also didn't seem to have much structure to it, jumping around from formal to casual. It might be a useful starting point for some, but I found "Mens Wardrobe" by kim Johnston Gross much more useful & pleasant to read
Concise, straightforward and truly indispensible - By: buddingpasha, 08 Oct 2002
The premise of this book is firstly that style & especiallly classic style is somethings that fathers pass onto their sons. Secondly it works on the premise that it is better to have fewer timeless classics than a wardrobe full of rubbish. It has a Q & A type format that is very informative & readable as well as giving a good history of why certain clothes are the way they are. I found the 30 second checklists especiallly helpful. I confess I bought this after watching the BBC's What Not To Wear programme & wondering if there could be some sort of guide for guys. There is & this is it. WARNING, you could lose your existing wardrobe with this book & shopping will never be the same!
