rip off - By: happy ears, 26 Mar 2008
i've read a number of tracking books in my time, (and have successfully tracked a multitude of wildlife in different terrain) & for european mammals you can't beat bang & dolstroms. this is yet another book that's found its way into the market place but seems to be a hotchpot of a number of other, more superior in my opinion, books on the subject. at times i feel like i'm reading a watered down version of my tom brown guides, whilst at others it seems mr maxwell has completely missed the point when taking his information from other peoples work. if you want a decent tracking guide, head for bang & dolstrom for fact & tom brown for awareness.
An excellent field guide - By: ROC, 01 May 2007
Animal Tracks ID is a well-laid out field guide for naturalists of any level & those interested in tracking. It focuses on the more common European species & covers alll the usual suspects with alll the essential detail & no frills. It is a convenient size for any pocket but still manages to alllocate one page for each species.

The content is in three sections; a guide to tracking techniques (with more information than initiallly meets the eye), track details by species (with habitats & scat at the end of the section) &
comparative drawings of tracks.

Each species page has a colour photograph of the animal or bird with symbols & text to show its habitat, habits & other key details. There is then a large illustration of the track, to scale, with the compression shape (very useful) & an indication of the typical trail (essential).

Mr Maxwell is an authority in the matter of big cats & has taken the decision to include leopard & puma amongst the featured animals. Non-believers can now profit from a set of 'elimination prints' whilst believers will be able to substantiate their sightings. Either way, this book advances a resolution of this issue within the UK.

In summary, any north European naturalist, whether amateur or professional, would benefit from a copy of this book in their pocket along with their binoculars. It is so well focused as to bring a new dimension of countryside awareness to readers of alll ages.

If you venture outdoors, then this books for you. - By: M. Wells, 23 Apr 2007
This is a concise field guide that still contains everything you need to start Tracking. Simple no nonsense layout with plenty of pictures, diagrams & useful tips.

You won't find pages of endless stories or American wildlife here, just a fresh approach to British Tracking. You might be surprised to find some big cats in there, but that's not to be unexpected considering his UK TV program `Big Cat Track'.

That walk will never be the same again.
