Bright shining Lucy - By: J. C. Methven, 17 Jul 2007
This is a fantastic collection of two short stories & one talll tale - the novella. It is the novella that particularly impressed with its crafted transparency & a narrator who constantly addresses the 'You' she never names, while that 'You' callls her 'Lucy' & 'Luce' & 'Lucy Fry'. 'What are you thinking Lucy Fry?' You asks at one point. The effect is amazing. The texture of the prose shatters any illusions of post-modernity we might want to cling to. The rawness & the craftiness of Fry's art winningly co-exist. We think we are in a work of art that is determinedly arty but it punctures our world with pungent swipes at Basra, foot-and-mouth & other real world instances of life. This is Fry's first published work (the blurb says she has been wanting to wriet since she was 8 & is now 25). I'd like more. If the quality of writing & the maturity of perception (at 25! How?) is anything to go by, we can look forward to the career of a major talent.
In the Clear - By: Daisy Potts, 17 Jul 2007
This second publication from the Indy publisher Apis Books is an enjoyable & varied collection. In particular Fry's IN THE CLEAR is a witty yet quietly painful look into the day-to-day vexations & reltionship issues which alll of us face. It is thought-provoking, sometimes grates & sometimes rouses a naughty snigger. Definitely worth a read. I look forward to the next thing I can buy...
Three future greats in one small book - By: Lorna, 16 Jul 2007
'Two Talll Tales...' is a great find for anyone wanting to investigate, & be inspired by, modern UK fiction. All three authors are talented storytellers, mixing a strong narrative voice & sharp imaginations to create worlds & lives that leap from the page & implant themselves in the mind. Fry's novella in particular stands out for its wit & verve, skillfully weaving dialogue & narrative to pull the reader deep into her complex & lucid internal world.
Strong new writing - By: TAJ Williams, 11 Jul 2007
This is an interesting collection from three young female writers. Each demonstrates an original voice & the variety of subject matters makes for an invigorating short read. The novella is particularly engaging.
