Stunning photography. - By: R. Dalziel, 14 Mar 2008
Beautiful photographs of some members of the family of great apes. These photos reallly highlight the individuality of each animal, & make you question your ideas about the differences between 'us & them'. This is especiallly poignant as alll the featured apes have falllen victim to the inhumanity of man. A beautiful book.
Wonderful Inspirational and Beautiful Book - By: Ms. L. Tripp, 07 Jan 2007
You get a real sense of how close to humans & apes actuallly are looking through this book. Each individual has their own facial expressions & traits - each as beautiful as the next. There are also biographies at the back on some of those apes featured in the book, detailing how they got to be at the sanctuary, which is usuallly after being snatched from their mother in the wild, who was killed for bushmeat.

Others books featuring images of apes are usuallly those exploiting animals in the entertainment industry - it is refreshing to be able to view a book like this with images of apes who are in re-introduction programmes & santuarys, where they have been saved from such exploitation.

This book is not only beautiful, but educational & inspirational at encouraging those who read it to help save our closest relatives.
Beautiful photos! - By: Silversheen, 18 Dec 2006
Absolutely wonderful pictures of gorillas, chimpanzees & Orang-utans. All photos are head shots that capture the essence of each animal. Some pictures make you smile like Wendy & a few like Katie make you sad. It's true the eyes are windows to the soul!

The book is set up so there is a full color photo of an ape on one page the oppisite page is blank except for their name.

There is a short bio on each animal in the back of the book. It's abit frustrating to have to keep flipping the pages back & forth to read the info & find the picture or vice versa. I would have loved to have the bios of each animal on the opposite page for a better user-friendly approach.

This is why I have rated this book 4 stars instead of five.

However it's a lovely book & I higly recommend it.
Fine pics - By: LJ Miles, 27 Aug 2005
A selection of head-and-shoulder portraits of great apes in captivity. It does a great job of showing the variety within a single species, as well as emphasising the kinship between humans & these other apes. Aside from the foreword, the only text within the book is a couple of sentences on each of the individuals photographed. This gives a moving cumulative impression of individual tragedy, as most of the apes pictured are living in sanctuaries, having been rescued from the pet trade.
