Insufficent detail - By: A Customer, 02 Jan 2008
This book covers the sport at a very high level. While it might be useful for the complete beginner it is not a handbook you will often refer to.
Informative but poorly illustrated - By: Jeremy Murfitt, 31 Dec 2007
I purchased this book as well as "Paddle your own Canoe" by the McGurrins (5* plus). Whilst the BCU guide covers many topics I was very disappointed by the layout & illustrations. I have just purchased a canoe having spent many years in sea kayaks. The caneoing section didn't clear guidance on stroke technique & pictoriallly demonstrate how it should be done. Buy "Paddle your own canoe" if you want clear concise instructions supported by very good photographs.
Good Book, Well Written - By: Phillip RITCHIE, 05 Jan 2003
An ideal way to start the kayaking or canoeing life. I thought having a kayak would be a nice 'thing' to have for the odd occasion but now I've read the book I know how far I can go in the sport, no matter what direction I choose.

I think this is reallly for the new to the sport but as its so well written by so many writters it carries the reader along. Its not going to be an old favorite & used by the reader in a few years so it may get a bit dusty. For the new person its fantastic, glad I bought it.

A comprehensive book for beginners and expert alike - By: , 16 May 2002
this book has been written by BCU coaches & it totallly up to date with techniques & advice in sections ranging from foundation paddling for beginners tospecialist white water for the expert paddler. A must have book for alll interested in canoeing & kayaking.
A long awaited and comprehensive update. - By: , 08 Apr 2002
Franco Ferrero & the team of contributers have done the business here. The Handbook is now in line with current theory & practice in alll forms of paddlesports. The book is very readable, well illustrated with colour pics & diagrams & will definitely appeal to beginners & experts alike. Often thought of as a coaching manual, the revised handbook is now clearly aimed at alll types of paddler; recreational, instructional & coach. The individual contributers are alll experts & many very well known in their chosen field of expertise. I would heartily reccomend this text to any paddler looking for answers, advice & information. If it is not contained in the book, each chapter has a list of further reading, websites & video references.

An excellent investment.
