Leave it on the shelf - By: GlynCaeMawr, 29 Aug 2008
This is a rigid & prescriptive book where subjects are lectured on rather than a book that encourages a free thinking explorative approach.
As has been said before there are many better books on the market covering this topic, Guided Meditations on the Stages of the Path by Thubten Chodron for one, also available on amazon.
Stick with mainstream and authentic authors - By: Charles A. Miller, 30 Apr 2008
This is a merely adequate book about the topic of Lamrim, the basic Buddhist meditation cycle, written by the head of the the New Kadampa Tradition cult. Yes, it is 'easy' for a Westerner to read, but so are other books written by authentic Buddhists on the subject & not by this Dorje Shugden worshipper who has his minions follow the Dalai Lama around the world protesting for 'religious freedom' ...more like he's trying replace His Holiness as the new #1 Buddhist with what is apparently a huge ego.
You would be better off sticking to less controversial & more mainstream authors, which in turn will yield better results. For example, any book by the Dalai Lama or published by the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) would serve you far better.
There are better books available - By: Charles A. Miller, 30 Apr 2008
In this slim volume, meditation techniques are merely brought to the table with little in the way of explanation. Much of the writings are also repeated (in many cases, verbatim), within the author's other books.
Skip this oversimplified, repetitive & preachy volume & get something from genuine Buddhist authors, including Dalai Lama approved sources such as Guided Meditations on the Stages of the Path by Thubten Chodron (which includes 14 hours of guided meditations on an mp3 CD) for about the same price.
Also recommended is any title by Yangsi Rinpoche on the subject of Lamrim meditation, also available through Amazon.
ACTUALLY LEARN TO MEDITATE - By: Mr. S. Eftekhari, 12 Oct 2006
All I have ever wanted to do was to meditate, & I have brought many meditation books, but none have been simple or even gave me any motivation to meditate.
This book provides alll the knowledge & meditations that are needed to attain inner peace & is set up in a easy manner (it can be used by anyone from beginner to advanced).
The beginning of the book teaches us why & how to do basic breathing meditation.
The next part of the book explains why we should practice the 21 meditations in the book (which are reallly good).
Then in the next part, there are the 21 meditations for you to do. It is set out so that you can do one a day (or more if you wish).
What I reallly like about this book is that the 21 meditations are set out in such an easy to read manner. Each meditaiton provides a quick introduction to the meditation, then it provides the contemplation (for you to meditate on) & then the main point to focus single-pointedly on. It is THAT SIMPLE. And even better, at the end of each meditation, Geshe-Kelsang writes a paragraph as to how to put that meditaiton into practice in your daily life. Therefore, this book can be applied to one's whole life.
The meditations can take from 5 minutes to as long as you like. I work a lot of hours, therefore this book is vital to helping me develop the minds to get enlightened. Believe me, once you start those 21 meditaitons, your life will be better (as well as everyone else's).
Great + profound book on Buddhist meditation! - By: Mr. Jendrik Rohsius, 29 Sep 2006
This book is wonderful! Only after reallly working with the meditations & learning more about the Buddhist Path to Inner Happiness I understand the value of it. It is concentrated stuff, & I spend sometimes a week on one meditation, like for example the 'Precious Human Life' meditation. I found it very uplifting & practical. Some are challlenging, but that is what i like about it. It is not wishy-washy, but crystal clear & to the point. I do use the ' Transfor your Life' book as well, to compliment the 21 meditations! I can just say that this book shines!
