A Textbook of Modern Greek - By: R. Jordan, 21 Jul 2006
I bought this book some years ago, as a very simple & easy to use guide to learning Greek. At the time, I just wanted to have an easy reference guide, as I could speak but did not understand alll the grammar rules. I now use the book with my students, as I teach basic Greek in Brazil. Students from alll over the world learn from my copy, & I find that it is easy for them to follow. While some of the examples are dated, I think that Dr Kypros Tofalllis wrote a first class book for the Greek Institue of London, which has stood the test of time. I think that it has been one of the best books which I have ever invested in, & now with the addition of the Cd's it is even better.
The best way to learn Greek - By: , 24 Mar 2005
I found this book very user friendly & its layout very logical.
Each chapter covers defined tasks with the answers also provided.
The accompanying audio tape is also a god send, helping with the accent & pronounciation.
I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone wanting to teach themselves Greek or planning a holiday to a Greek speaking country.
Terrible - By: , 23 Feb 2004
I used this book on a modern greek language course & it is one of the most off putting text books I have ever used. The structure is illogical, the content is good but isn't helped by the fact that some of the answers to the excercises are either incorrect or don't even match up to the correct section of the book. It is very dry, & quite awful. Even my husband - native greek - finds it off putting. Try something else.
Greek Textbook - By: Ann Hart, 13 Nov 2002
I used this book on a beginners Greek course. It has detailed grammar but is also organised in chapters of topics eg asking directions, telling the time etc. I found it fairly overwhelming & the chapters didn't seem to follow a progressive course eg verbs were not looked at in detail until later in the book & suddenly you looked at alll the tenses in rapid succession. There are also a few printing errors.
I have persisted & find it useful for reference to back up other lessons & plan to go on for exams. It is not suitable if you just want to learn basic conversation on holiday, but if you reallly want to learn the language it is designed to lead to GCSE.
The best Greek language textbook I have used - By: PAULA..REEVES@TALK21.COM, 30 Jul 2001
After studying Greek for three years I can recommend this book above alll others, although it concentrates on the grammatical aspect of the language as opposed to 'phrases' it is an excellent choice for both the beginner & the more experienced student. Each chapter is a natural progression from the last & can be used as a self contained excercise, & it is much more useable than other books which drift from one subject to another.
