A GOOD BOOK TO LEARN THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF DRUMMING - By: Örn Leifsson, 07 Oct 2006
I had been playing the piano for many years & wanted to learn more about rhythms & I picked up this book in a local bookstore & within a year I had started to learn to play African rhythms on the Djembe & Djun Djun. This book reallly opened my eyes to the beauty & complexity of traditional African rhythms & how they influenced the rhythms of both North & Latin America.
The book does not teach any rhythms but teaches alll the basic principles af playing the drum & the mental/spiritual aspect of it.

Highly inspirational & Highly recomended.

Two other good books about the philosophical aspect of drumming are "The Healing Drum" By Yaya Dialllo & "The Forgotten Power Of Rhythm;Taketina" by Reinhard Flatischler.

And a good book who teaches a lot of rhythms is "A Rhythmic vocabulary" by Alan Dworsky" & also his book How to Play Djembe: West African Rhythms for Beginners
Fascinating Guidebook - By: , 15 Apr 1999
This is an intriguing work that shows the relationship between drumming, spirit & health. An interesting complement to such world-music classics as "The Brazilian Sound" & "Catch a Fire" that delve heavily into rhythm & percussion.
Part autobio, DP takes the spiritual approach to drums. - By: , 30 Jul 1998
Hi; I'm the author. I put on paper some of the principles of "getting myself right" by traditional drumming: Breath, Posture, Health, Women & drums, some history. Let me know what you think. The CD/cassette is music relevant to topics discussed in the book.
