A mine of difficult-to-find information - By: R. Moreton, 08 Aug 2003
I agree with Chris Freeman. If you come across the Guptas, the Huns, or the Lombards, you will find them here, Parthians & Sassanians too, but a glance at Celtic British coins shows the limitations.

Some of the designs are interestingly stylised, very striking & attractive. There is a special section of the book devoted to enlarged "Masterpieces", such as the one on the cover.

A good introduction to a very wide area of numismatics. - By: Chris Freeman(chrisf@aedairy.com), 14 Aug 2001
While a very cursory glance of this extremely large topic, it does give the reader a touchstone on which to begin a numismatic pursuit. There is no way a single book, let alone one a short as this, can begin to cover such this subject, this is a valuable reference for a beginner. Even though written for novices in this area, one will find yourself referring back to it frequently.

The book is broken down into disjointed segments that give brief overviews of the cultures, along with major rulers & examples or thier coinage. Most major cultures also have examples of the different denominations they produced. The bibliography is also listed for each culture, although some are so little studied that this amounts to one or two references. No attempt is made to list coins & values, but this is good since any attempt would be futile in a work of this size.

Overalll, a nice intro book on an area where reference material is usuallly very scarce & very pricey.
