Slim firing on all cylinders - By: , 05 Mar 2001
Iceberg Slim's "Death Wish" sees the author on top form, in a gritty portrayal of organised crime. Slim offers the unique viewpoint of two different sides to organised crime: we have the traditional mafia aspect, with Don Collucci, but also the more urban aspect involving Jessie Taylor. The novel has the air of authenticity one would expect from Iceberg Slim. It's as gripping & pacey as a crime thriller should be, & while not quite as resonant as his masterpiece "Pimp", it still contains some breathtaking moments, including a torture & execution scene in a warehouse that goes horribly awry. Ultimately, this is a showcase for snappy writing within the confines of the crime genre, elevated by the unique style of Iceberg Slim into something more worthwhile.
