Handy, but concise and perhaps old fashioned - By: , 22 May 2002
This is a great portable dictionary for the person learning Dutch. I keep mine in the car, & it gets a good workout when I listen to Dutch language radio. It was originallly published in 1978, so it is a bit old fashioned as Dutch spelling rules have been revised.

It is also very concise, for example it tells you that 'paard' means horse, but not how to form the plural. Also, there are many words & expressions that it does not cover.

The advantage of this book is that is has roughly twice as many words as the widely available Wolters mini-dictionary. Neither Wolters nor Hippocrene are sufficient for say reading a novel or a letter from the government in Dutch. The main value is for the tourist or student as a portable aid.

This book provides a fairly comprehensive translation of Dutch to English & English to Dutch. It provides some guidance on word usage & grammar. Be warned, however, because the book doesn't exactly provide any assistance in pronouncing any of the Dutch words. If you have spoken only English alll your life, Dutch pronunciation can make your life interesting!
