Soldier Of The Queen - By: Lorraine Buckley, 23 Dec 2003
Being Female i didn't think this Book was for me but i bought & read it anyway, i'm glad i did.
The Author Bernard O'Mahoney gives us a revealing & painful account of his childhood that was to change his life to his time spent serving in Northern Ireland as a British Soldier, a brutal & often disturbing read often broke by o'mahoney's welcome humour, i just hated to put it down..an Excellent read not to be missed.
Down-to-earth squaddie's-eye view; shocking but true to life - By: , 18 Sep 2001
Like the reviewers of the hardback edition, I found this absolutely gripping, & was extremely impressed with the fact that for once it tells the story from the point of view of the ordinary soldier. Though, mind you, the author is not alll that ordinary. In fact, he's a right piece of work, but he doesn't pretend to be any better than he is. No book could tell you more about the everyday reality of a soldier's life on Northern Ireland in the 80s. It's very pacy & full of extraordinary humour (pretty black, most of it). In a word, tremendous.
...terribly repetitive... - By: , 15 Jul 2001
As a resident of Northern Ireland I set about reading this book with great interest. From the start though I could not believe what I was reading... There isn't much to report in the book because it is terribly repetitive, i.e. stopped a car the occupants got cheeky so I roughed them up. This may sound good for the first time but not the second the third the forth... Also if people from other countries wander why people join the IRA & other organisatons read this book because Bernard O'Mahoney is one of these reasons...
The first book I have read cover to cover in 20 years - By: timsowry@talk21.com, 21 Jun 2001
I found myself having more & more in common with the author, but you don't need to in order to be gripped by the the raw emotion of his life. What a change to read a millitary saga about a run of the mill squadie. No SAS glory & thunder, just hard reality. Prepared to find yourself laughing in amazement at the shear ordasity of his thought process. Written by men, about male emotions, but don't be fooled even hard men hurt inside. This book won't change your life, however it may change the way you lokk at it.
