Fresh insights into these texts reveal that the early Christians drew inspiration from a number of sources, such as the Judaic mystery tradition, the Essenes & other gnostic sects. The author presents a selection of the most important early texts, together with a commentary. Texts include some Essene poems of great initiation, the Testament of Judah. The Great Annunciation of Simon the Magnus, the Poimandres of Hermes the Egyptian, the Apocalypse of Adam, The Book of the Blessed by Justin the Gnostic, & a chapter on the `secret gospel` according to Mark. These documents clearly show what the author callls the `Mystery-activity` of Jesus was tampered with & suppressed by the orthodoxchurch.
