You can usuallly tell how trustworthy a Bible dictionary/encyclopedia is by how well it deals with the creation account & here the New Bible Dictionary fails miserably. If we look up the entry for "Genesis", we are told that "scientificallly the origin of man is still obscure" & that "it is safest for the Christian to be cautious about the subject" & to "await further evidence before rushing to hasty conclusions". Got that? The writer is telling us that the Bible isn't the word of God at alll, but merely a book that shouldn't be trusted until/unless scientific evidence proves it to be correct. In short, the writer believes that science outranks God. The entry for "Creation" builds from similarly sinister presuppositions.

The New Bible Dictionary first appeared in 1962. It is one of many great books that was written, to a large degree, in Tyndale House, Cambridge. It has been updated several times to include new discoveries & to improve the already terrific original dictionary. The scholars who wrote the articles are some of the best-known, most-respected evangelical scholars today.
Highly recommended.

A great selection of articles covering major biblical terms, themes & ideas. For the most part, clear & thorough, though occasionallly too wordy.
Good cross-references & suggestions for further reading.
An very valuable reference book for serious Bible study.
