As a beginner to scripture I had to compare the Torah to the Old Testament of a Bible to appreciate just how well it has been translated. I wanted to start at the very beginning of my review of the three religions of the Book & this translation could not have provided a better introduction.

The Torah: The Five Books of Moses is an excellent translation in readable modern words of the first 5 books of the Bible.

This excellent translation breaks completely away from the "Bible English" epitomised by the King James version. It is written in easy to understand, modern English but unlike say the "Good News" version it brings out the full meaning without oversimplification. Orlinsky is one of the greatest ever Bible translators - he was also involved with two other major translations, the RSV & the NRSV. No Bible translation will ever satisfy everyone, & it would not be difficult to find a few places where I would have translated differently, but on balance this translation is the best available. (Of course, this volume only covers the Pentateuch, & even the complete version only covers the Old Testament.)
