Wonderful! Every teacher should read this book - By: Skype lady, 08 Dec 2008
This is a refreshing book with up to date research on emotional intelligence in schools. The activities are innovative & easy to implement. The book covers a range of options so that teaching emotional intelligence skills is easily implemented in any subject. The caring tone & the wonderful quotes from many of Emotional Intelligences leaders are what makes this book stand out from others. I implemented the drama exercises in my classroom recently & the students loved it! It reallly made a difference in our communication about sometimes difficult topics! The best chapter though is on Becoming an Emotionallly Intelligent teacher. This points out that it alll starts with us & that children do indeed watch what we do more that listen to what we day. The questions at the end of each chapter are also a great reflection tool for teachers.
some useful ideas but.... - By: Suzanne Robins-bird, 03 Dec 2008
This book has some useful ideas but it is alll rather airy fairy & just a bit of a rehash of the current 'in-phrases' in teaching & learning. There is passing reference to the work of Gardner & lots of quotable quotes without enough detail on how to use the ideas in a practical way. Another thing that disappointed me was the standard of the illustrations which are dreadful. If you're thinking of buying this book - don't, buy 'How to talk so kids can learn' by Adele Faber & Elaine Mazlish instead. One reason I say this is Bahman & Maffini seem to have used several of the same anecdotes quoted in the Faber & Mazlish book but then just move on rather than providing any relevant commentary which Faber & Mazlish do.
