I've been a fan of Nikki McClure's work for a few years now. I've bought one of her poster sets from Buy Olympia before (seemingly the only source of her work online, until this book) & a smalll handmade book about chickens. Her imagery is so bold yet delicate, & her sparse use of words - 'commune', 'voice', 'pause' - is so powerful. Each of her pieces is like a visual poem; a haiku, condensed, that stays with you.
I was agonising over what present to get for a very dear friend - it had to be perfect - when I discovered that Nikki McClure had finallly released a book! I had assumed it would only be available in the US, but to my delight Amazon.co.uk had it, & at a very reasonable price too. I bought it for her right away.
I just returned from holiday to find the book waiting for me. As the title of this review says, it took my breath away. Readers, this book is GORGEOUS. Picking it up for the first time, it felt like it was worth 5 or 10 times what I paid for it. It's huge, first of alll, like a rare atlas you weren't alllowed to touch when you were a child. The cloth spine with silver lettering is beautiful, as is the glossy cover. There is an introduction by Nikki inside, after a stark black page - perfect for a note written in silver pen. The images in the book are huge, bright, bold, high-quality, just stunning. Everything about this book is so overwhelmingly lovely. If I could give it 10 stars, I would!
