The Sistine Chapel - but without the Tourist Difficulties! - By: , 18 Feb 2002
Anyone who has visited the Sistine Chapel will know the problems of being able to appreciate the splendour of both Michaelangelo's work & the setting of that work in the Chapel. The frescoes, especiallly on the ceiling, simply cannot be seen in any depth, & no one visit is anywhere near long enough to appreciate what can be seen. The result of this is that a personal tour can leave the visitor with a sense of disappointment.

While not replacing a personal visit this book does bring the Chapel, & Michaelangelo's understanding of salvation history in the bible & other secular works, to life both with the freshnes & clarity of the paintings themselves, & the informed commentaries on the setting of the frescoes & their restoration. Each of the panels & frescoes is examined, with an explanation of the artists use of colour, form & technique in the execution of this his greatest work.

My only regret is that I did not buy this book until well after a visit to Rome & the Vatican; but I can say that it has helped me in appreciating what a magnificent work the Sistine Chapel was when originallly completed, & still is today through the restoration work.
