Merriam's Anthropology of Music is still a great book, even nearly forty years after it was first written. If you're learning about the music of other cultures (or even about your own) then Merriam is quite a good place to begin. His model, i.e. that we need to study music sound, music concepts & music behaviour, remains influential & helpful today.
