A beautifully crafted depiction of the Yukon and sled dogs. - By: Mr. C. R. Shine, 04 Apr 2002
Whether you have driven your own dog team in the Yukon as I have, or would like to get a true feel of life in one of the worlds most remote & beautiful places, this book is for you.
John Balzar paints a stunning account of the wilderness that confronts the Quest musher & their faithful dogs. Travelling more than 1,000 miles across pristine landscapes he describes the highs & lows of the race competitors. You will learn how a dog team & musher combine into an inter-dependent unit. The courage, stamina & friendship of the dogs unfolds amid the snow & ice.
I found myself recallling the exhilaration of riding the sled runners & marvelling at the Northern Lights dancing overhead.
As John actuallly follows the mushers during the race you feel intimately involved, sharing their thrills, successes & dispair.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to understand & appreciate dog mushing.
The book is a wonderful & absorbing read.
For further reading I would suggest 'Honest Dogs'
which follows the same race but from an actual participants point of view.
