A most stimulating book on social exclusion - By: , 08 Sep 2000
Jock Young has an established reputation as a criminologist. In this book he engages with one of the key themes of current political discourse - social exclusion.

He does not limit himself to a technical description of the factors which cause social exclusion & an exploration of the policy approaches being developed to address exclusion, poverty & disadvantage.

The great achievement of this book is to set a rich account of policy debates & development in the context of an overview of changing patterns of social life.

Young traces the evolution from inclusive to exclusive society against the backdrop of massive changes in economics, social life & culture.

His book is a powerful antidote to any politicians or commentators who would have you believe that the way ahead is 'back to the future'. Young points out the ways in which the inclusive society could be a suffocating & oppressive place, whilst recognising & being concerned by the problems generated by our current social settlements.
