Striking New York imagery accompanies this vivid story of friendship. - By: ELH Browning, 15 Oct 2007
This is a vivid story of a cat who, the moment his owner is out of the house opens the cage of his best friend the canary so he can whirl & twirl over the city. Cat stays on the roof tops and, because he doesn't chase them, the birds are his friends. One windy day cat gets entangled in a kite & is himself whisked up amongst the sky-scrapers which is exciting & scary in equal measure. He worries how he will get back home but Canary & the other birds save the day.
The exceptionallly striking New York imagery makes this book stand out from the rather too sweet look that seems to bulk out children's sections in high street bookshops. Thee illustrations are vibrant with the dark greys of the buildings, the darkening snowy night with a rich purple undertone contrasting strongly with the very yellow of the kite & luminous daytime skies, & the bright pinkss & other colours of the people below.
In addition to being an exciting story of Cat's adventure across the skyline, this could be considered a contemporary take on the message of the The Lion & the Mouse with its underlying moral about how things that go around, come around - Cat was good to the birds & then they in return helped him out when he needed it. There's gentle humour too: the cat's owner thinks his puss is a lazy-bones, content to lie in the warmth but cat is dreaming of future adventures. A strikingly different book & a definite winner in our house.
