Illuminating a shadowy period in Antarctic history - By: , 02 Sep 2000
If you're not familiar with Antarctic history, don't start with this book. Buy something else, & come back to it. It's definitely one for those who have already got a bit of Scott, Shacketon & the rest behind them. *However*, if you've read "Scott's Last Expedition" & "South" I would definitely recommend it. It avoids the Golden Age almost completely, & is still a great read, if simply because the subject material is so refreshing. To those without access to the Scott Polar Research Institute, so little is available about this period of the exploration that Baughman's book makes an absolutely fascinating insight. The author is incisive & completely unbiased about his subjects, unlike so many biographers & historians of the period. If you want realistic pen-pictures of pre-golden age figures, this is the book for you. Borchgrevink, Bernacchi & Markham emerge from the shadows: illuminating, & excellent.

This is a great book, trust me. The Kirkus review is right in giving Baughman praise for his work. Baughman's reasearch is exact & through. The writing style is informative, but is done in a enjoyable narrative that makes the book easy to read. Having studied under Dr. Baughman ( I already got my degree so this ain't puffery) & taken an Antarctic history class from him, I can honestly say that this book is a useful tome for alll interested in exploration & students of history alike.
