A helpful perspective - By: Charles Porter, 05 Sep 2007
I was impressed with this take on primal wounding, particularly with regards to how it can play itself out in terms of addictive behaviour later in life. The real test of the book was in lending it out to others & finding that the people I'd lent it to then bought copies of their own. I was helped by the concept of the upper & lower unconscious, & the diagrams that went with this were useful, too. The primal wound is one of those primary concepts that found its way into the heart of my practice as a counsellor, & this book contextualises it incredibly well.
the most lucid book on the basic problem of being human - By: , 29 Jan 1999
Jonh Firman's "The Primal Wound" (with help from partner Ann Gila), is definitely not just another self-help book. It is the book to read if you want to understand the deep dynamics of growing up & the wounds or the primal wound that you carry.Using the wonderfully post-Jungian model of Psychosynthesis, Firman details in clear & simple language the development of wounds & how they create a survival personality that is different from one's authentic personality. The book is a gem, full of ideas from amny sources. The integration of them will cause transpersonal theorists to take a closer look at what psychosythesis theory has to offer. This book shows that it has a lot to offer because it is integrative & synthesizing in nature. This dynamic is part of the structure of Psychosynthesis & Firman's book proves that we haven't heard the last of him. There is a wealth of material here & wisdom as powerful as it gets.
