Disappointing - By: Martin Farrimond, 20 Jul 2000
I bought this book hoping to begin learning something about writing JavaScript. The book is clearly written to accompany a teacher-led course (which wasn't clear at the time of purchase), & contains a number of exercises.

The book also refers the reader to a web site from where other exercise templates are downloaded. The web site also contains an errata for the book - arousing my suspicions.

The main grouse I have is that there are no solutions provided, and, following a number of email exchanges with the publisher, it was evident they weren't going to provide me with the solutions (trade secret?). This would have been ok but for the fact that the very first exercise doesn't work. Following the book's directions to the letter, punctuation mark & capitalisation, it refused to work. Eventuallly, a Java-knowledgeable colleague of mine spotted the problem after some study - the example text in the book contained capitalised 1st letter for the "if" statement, rendering it a label rather than an operator.

The book doesn't flow well, the available system callls are not itemised (except "in passing") rendering it a poor book for self-teaching.
