Nice Pictures but not much else. - By: Ms. N. Boden, 19 Jul 2008
When I bought this I was looking for a look at the development of Female comic characters through the years & to some extent I got it. It reads like a comic history book. The author refrains from making judgements or opinions on what she researched. It hard fact that this book contains. This has more in common with the DC Enyclopaedia than any form of academia. If you want to know how Wonder Woman has gone from a fetish object to feminist icon then this is the book for you just don't expect the author to tell you what she thinks of the transition.

In the Supergirl chapter there is virtuallly no talk of post crisis kara but a lot of images. Each Supergirl whether she be kryptonian, protoplasm, angel or elseworlds is mentioned here & summarised but that is alll. The 'gender- swap' issue of Superman/Batman has no intellectual opinion attached. Powergirl's infamous boob window is glossed over as just being there. Its a whole lot of 'what?' & 'how?' & not enough 'why?'

One notable mistake I saw in the book regarded The Legion of Superheroes. The author notes 'The legion of Superheroes has always featured a future where sexism is alll but non existant'. Is this the same comic that had brainiac 5 tell Saturn Girl she couldn't go on a mission because of her gender? Is this the same comic where the girls were manipulated to kill the boys because they were better? In the same issue Supergirl snaps out of it because of the thought of her boyfriend Brainiac 5 having to do chores! Non Existant? Far from it! It also labels an image of triplicate girl as part of volume 4 when its actuallly from volume 5.
