Ok but the tests are not good enough - By: Mr. M. A. Silburn, 20 Mar 2008
Just failed the exam, mainly due to the new stuff in v5. While I'll accept responsibility for not working hard enough to make up the gaps in my knowledge, on the tests in the book I was getting 75%+ but only archived 55% in the exam so don't rely on the test scores. The questions are simply not difficult enough for the exam, nor do they cover things like generics well enough. I suspect the tests were just a quick refresh of the questions form v1.4 rather than a thoughtful rewrite. As the other reviewer has said. The question pool is quite smalll so not reallly 5 different practice exams at alll
Excellent Guide - By: Mr. G. Howell, 20 Aug 2006
This book provides an excellent guide to the objectives for the scjp exam. I read the entire book in about 3 weeks which tightened my knowledge of the java programming language as well as prepare for the exam. Some chapters took a few reads due to the fact that pre-requisite knowledge was assumed, which was later explained in the book. For the most part, the author explains concepts very well but I often found myself getting frustrated when my understanding of a topic was later disproved. I put this down to the fact that the author (quite rightly) goes into profound depth, which is required for the exam, but often trips over his own words. Since java is so precise in definition I can understand the difficulties in explanation. The best way around this is practice. Since the book is intended as a study guide, there are few worked examples which forced me into thinking up my own. I also found a lot of typos throughout the book as well as some exam questions which were simply incorrect (I checked them out). This got extremely frustrating. The book comes with 5 practice exams which sounds like a bargain but unfortunately 4 of them (found on the cd) simply reorder questions found elsewhere in the book. Whats more, the answers for the 4 exams on the cd are often wrong. I assume this is down to the fact that the questions & associated multi-choice answers were re-ordered & the answers were not! I therefore suggest that you check your answers as you go. rather than checking them at the end of the exam.
On the whole I found this book an excellent read & would recomend it to other programmers wanting (or having!) to sit the scjp exam.
