A good concise review of pharmacology. - By: , 30 Nov 2000
The book is clearly organised into 44 self-study units with each chapter being an independent structured learning module. Each chapter deals with a specific class of drug & goes through the pharmacology in a logical & ordered fashion. The text is concise & yet still manages to explain core concepts in a clear fashion. The book itself is aimed as a companion text to lecture notes & a main pharmacology textbook & is most useful as a tool for consolidating & ensuring clear understanding of the class & action of drugs.

The book is heavily illustrated throughout & this is its major strength. The diagrams are clear & easy to interpret & the chapter can easily be followed by examining the figures in the side margin. The icons explaining the adverse side effects of drugs are brilliant & maybe a key in the back cover, along with some pathophysiology would be a helpful addition. Incorporating colour & giving the mannequin a name could improve the illustrations & give the book a bit more sparkle!

The outline tree diagrams at the beginning of each chapter are a great tool & give a suitable lead into the chapter itself & the types of drugs available for that condition.

The multiple-choice questions (MCQs) provided are good with clear explanations but for a review book too few are provided. The answers need to be moved to the next page, as it was far too easy to read a MCQ & then read the answer below it. The big grey boxes around the answer are just too eye catching.

The book is clearly targeted at the American medical school market & this is evident in the terminology & the names of drugs used. This alone makes it confusing when being taught with British drug names & with exams being days away this additional layer of confusion is simply not needed. For example edema (US) & oedema (UK) & Norepinephrine (US) & Noradrenalin (UK).

The case studies are brilliant & put the pharmacology taught into practice. Again as with the MCQs the answers are directly provided below the question thus negating the need for any thinking to occur! The case studies represent how pharmacology is being taught in medical schools today with the emphasis on "problem-based learning".

The millennium update section is superb & provides us with a glimpse at what drugs we will be able to use during our clinical careers. As this section is about new drug classes & treatments maybe a bit more detailed background in the pathophysiology & pharmacology is needed to put it into context. This section in particular needs references to the scientific literature to enable us to read more about these drugs, which are at the cutting edge of pharmacology.

This book clearly sets out to review the pharmacology in a clear & ordered fashion whilst in the panic of exam revision. It achieves this feat with ease & with a few improvements will definitely become a must have pharmacology review book.

This book contains pictures, diagrams, tables & text. Great for the visual learner. It can be a supplement or replacement for many pharmacologic topics. I am a second year med student & use it routinely for both review & new information. A MUST!
