Di Le Bec - By: Di Le Bec, 22 Mar 2008
Beware this book is copyrighted 2004 & so is at least 4 years out of date - which in PC terms is a generation! Also note that the Amzon review saying that the book 1383 pages long is incorrect - 504 as quoted in product details is correct.
Compared to other books in the "Bible" series I found this one very disappointing. It is not as thorough as it needs to be - sometimes stopping short of the detail you need to make a reallly informed choice or to understand fully the technical aspects of the PC. Some of the labelling of the illustrations misses elements & the colour photos at the back have no detailed labels at alll. Perhaps less time spent on perhipherals & more the PC & its components would have been more to the point.
This book does not necessarily leave you ready to upgrade or repair your PC. As one example of its superficiality - it gives only one definition of a Gigabyte (based on the 1024 byte Kilobyte) & does not warn you hardware manufacturers specify hard drive sizes based on a 1000 byte Kilobyte (so you get less memory than you might expect).

Great Book - By: , 14 May 1999
I bought the book, & read it cover to cover. I learned a lot of stuff & I feel it is responsible for my success. The CD's are terrible though.
Superb! A "must read" for anoraks and IT professionals! - By: , 17 Mar 1999
Providing you are good with a glossary, don't mind spending a little time on sideways research, this book provides everything required on building your own PC for alll but the absolute beginner. Logicallly laid out, sensibly written & with good diagrams, this book teaches you the basics (RAM replacement) right through to more advanced skills such as building your own PC. Although a little dated now (printed before the advent of PIII etc), it gives enough knowledge for you to adapt to the new technologies coming on-line at the moment. One of the two CDs that came with the book didn't work (seemingly a common problem), but a quick e-mail to Amazon solved that problem without fuss (well done). Overalll, if you are an intermediate computer user who likes tinkering with the innards, or an IT professional who needs to learn more about hardware, this book is for you. Excellent!
Great Resorces - By: , 15 Jan 1999
The book is great, but the CD's that came with it are little to be desired. Only one of them works & the other works only in one of 9 machines.
