Well written, but doesn't travel well - By: , 06 Jun 2000
I'm almost a complete beginner to wines (other than having discovered by trial & error what I like of the stick at the local supermarket). This book tackles things on the sort of level I'm at, & with the explanations on various grapes I found certain common factors between the wines I reallly like - useful information when trying to branch out. The problem I found was with the middle portion of the book, where the review of specific wines didn't match our local off-licence that well. I assume that this reflects different wines being available in the UK & the US. It's a shame, because it meant that a fair bit of the book wasn't that useful, but the rest is interesting, accessible & a useful reference.
Great Intro - but tune those olefactory senses - By: , 02 Sep 1998
As a complete beginner to the subject of red wine this is a great yet simple introduction to the major red wine & grape types. There is no bias evident in the authors assessment & there is good guidance to the best value wines. The only downside is the somewhat superior references to the various scents found in the wines. Recommended.
Excellent guide for beginners - By: , 11 Jul 1998
This is one of the few wine books I've come across that goes out to the reader in plain everyday English. It does certainly make a complex subject a lot more approachable. A good introduction to red wine that answers the questions you were afraid to ask for fear of seeming to be ignorant. Read this before you go out & buy your first bottle of red wine & you'll enjoy it better!!
