A 'friendly guide' to what? - By: , 23 Aug 2001
This book was written for me. Or so I believed. I am a relatively experienced user of the various Microsoft operating systems in home & office environments but, until recently, I had never used Windows 2000 Professional outside the workplace. I was alll set to enrol for a course at night school until I remembered the "Dummies" series I discovered years ago when suddenly confronted with the brand new Windows 95. I have used several "Dummies" titles since & have looked on their authors as the ideal teachers most of us never had: gentle, endlessly patient, ready with a joke, & never ever making you feel like as though you reallly are a dummy.

This book is the 'friendly guide' it claims to be, but it is by no means an 'ideal introduction' to Windows 2000 Professional. In fact, it is difficult to find much that is specific to the Windows 2000 operating system. The majority of the text consists of very basic information relevant to any version of Windows. The authors assume that Windows 2000 is used only in the big corporate office in which a network administrator manages the Windows 2000 Server software. It does not occur to them that Windows 2000 is a good choice of operating system for the home or smalll business environment. Therefore, the issues on which I would have welcomed guidance tend to be marked with a 'Hand-Raiser' icon that indicates it is time to summon the office's omniscient & omnipresent network administrator to fix the problem.

There is a possibility, of course, that you have never used a computer with a Windows operating system yet have been employed in a highly paid capacity by a large corporation with a system running on Windows 2000. If this sounds like you, buy this book today before that ubiquitous network administrator notices your glazed expression as you stare at the pretty patterns on your screen-saver. For the majority of us this book is best regarded as another compilation of basic Windows tips. Anyone seeking an introduction to Windows 2000 Professional may have to resort to evening classes after alll. Alternately, you just might discover you're not the dummy you thought you were!

Read only if you have never used Windows before - By: , 07 Aug 2001
I am very disappointed with this book. It is the most basic book & I would only suggest it for people who have never seen or used Windows before. I feel mislead about the content of this book & will never buy one of the 'dummies' series again!...
THE MOST INCREDIBLE BOOK I'VE EVER READ! - By: , 28 Mar 2000
Fabulous! This book has just enabled me to land the job of my life - now get me the server edition & fast. This is the first book that anybody upgrading to Windows 2000 (Professional or Server) should read in my opinion. If I ever meet the author & those brilliant people at IDG, I shalll buy them the largest beers to say thanks for giving me yet another great Dummies book.
