A definite recommendation - By: S. Davison, 09 Oct 2008
I would most definitely recommend this book to the new & excited knitter.
I had only been knitting for a week or two when I bought this book, & within days I had moved on from the plain & simple garter stitch to purling, ribbing, creating cables, forming shapes, increasing, decreasing & designing my own shapes.
The step-by-step instructions accompanied by pictures make the book a valuable addition to any knitting bag. Each new stage feels like a gradual step forward & takes away the fear of new stitches. What seems like an impossibility at first glance rapidly becomes a simple manoeuvre, & confidence grows with every accomplishment.
I often take this book to bed with me, just to find inspiration & rejoice in my new passion!
Easily the best book for beginners - By: anonymous, 05 Oct 2008
I couldn't knit at alll, so got hold of a few books. Of alll the ones I tried, this was by far the easiest to follow, with the clearest instructions. It's also funny & down-to earth. I'd recommend getting a DVD as well, so that you can see what you're supposed to be doing. I got 'The Art of Knitting' which again, is clear. With the help of those two, I'm happily knitting now!
Tired old feminist politics - By: cranmere, 09 Aug 2008
I thought we had left Ms Stoller's particular brand of political feminism behind back in the 1970s but sadly it would appear that she is stuck in the past & regurgitating the old, tired, strident politics & trying to tie them to a great craft. There are much better books on knitting around which do not find it necessary to bludgeon the reader with outdated politics on every page.
Great Re-Introduction for the Lapsed Knitter - By: K. O'Reilly, 02 Jul 2008
I havent knit a stitch since I was ten years old, so I had completely forgotten everything about knitting. This book is a great re-introduction to the knitting basics & I found the diagrams & descriptions reallly easy to follow. The authors writing style includes lots of personal knitting experience stories which are inspirational & it also makes the book a good bedtime read too! I read the book on a Sunday night, its now Wednesday & i'm halfway through my first scarf, & thoroughly enjoying it!
Perfect for branching out - By: K. Roycroft, 26 Mar 2008
I knew the basics of knitting before I purchased this book but hadn't progressed beyond making stripey garter stitch scarves. This book was well suited to my needs, & I still go back to it for reference & to re-create my favourite designs. The introduction is interesting & provides an insight into the world of knitting as well as giving detailed technical instructions, with plenty of diagrams & photographs included along the way.
The patterns are perfect for a beginner - intermediate level knitter & the range of skills required are varied. There's everything from simple scarves & hats, to using circular needles, cabling, colourwork & socks. An experienced knitter might find this useful for the classic sweater patterns, but it is definitely intended for someone who is learning & getting to know the ropes. The book is clearly written & easy to understand. You'll be itching to get started on some of the beautiful projects & this is a great book to have in your collection.
