Good food, good drink and good friends... - By: Kurt Decoene, 07 Jul 2007
This book is truly excellent in such that it does not only give you authentic recipes but also a good look on Belgian culture. We do love our food...
Good food, good drink & good company are a way of life... This book takes care of the Good food part of it, combine it with a great Belgian beer (I'm not talking 'Stella Artois' here) & no doubt the good company part will take care of itself... It does show that Belgians reallly have a South-European approach to food & drink, different from Northern Europeans (though the Dutch & certainly the English are coming around to 'our' point of view on good food, 3 star restaurants are popping up everywhere in the Netherlands & the BBC seems a non-stop cooking-show on Saturday).
The stories in the book, the little anekdotes are a view on how Belgium used to be. As in the rest of the world, most of us do not have the time or the energy to do a lot of cooking during the week. But then you go for Sunday lunch at your parents place or good friends & that is when we still eat this kind of food. (at least in my circle of friends & family).
I think this book comes reallly close (especiallly for the recipes) to the legendary cookbook published by the Association of Belgian Farmers Wife's which is the absolute Bible of Belgian cuisine - I still use my mum's, which is 40 years old (and looks it). I don't think its ever been translated into English, but 'everybody eats well in Belgium' is a most excellent alternative & just as authentic !

This is the book I have been seaching for for decades;a true reflection of Belgian passion for food & life! So many of these recipes ,have instantly revived my memories of wonderful food-obsessed holidays spent with my Belgian grandmother in Brussels & at her country cottage. She was a superb cook & would have loved the enthusiasm ,clarity & quality of this wonderful book.I own over 600 cookbooks & few of them have given me such pleasure! My gratitude to the author for the excellent recipes & for giving me back my childhood .
Best cookbook ever - By: Johan Coppens, 09 Sep 2003
When reading the book, you just want to go in te kitchen & try out these real Belgian dishes (that is what I did). You can almost smell them when flicking through the pages. But this book is much more than just a cookbook. The book is also a tribute to Belgiums finest traditions & inheritance. When I read these sections, together with these marvellous receipts I felt proud to be Belgian.
At last: a delectable guide to all things Belgian - By: , 09 Nov 2000
A reallly brilliant, comprehensive tour of the best that Belgian cuisine has to offer. From waterzooi to waffles, shrimps to stoemp, Ruth van Waerebeck has got the lot. I had been looking for a book like this for years. Thank you!
A delicious introduction to Belgian cooking traditions - By: , 14 Feb 2000
This is a marvelous book with great classic recipes, but best of alll brief descriptions of Belgian cooking traditions, including pieces on the regional ingredients to Belgian beer. A great gift. Belgian cooking should be discovered by alll & this is the perfect introduction.
