An emotional powder keg - By: P. Greenhalgh, 19 Oct 2008
Nathan lives in his father's house in a Conneticut resort by the beach. His brother returns for a 2 week holidy, along with his boyfriend & a heterosexual couple who are having difficulties with their relationship. tThe powder-keg of emotions is enflamed when one of Nathan's students starts visiting the house. As Nathan struggles with his relationship with his dead father, the summer challlenges Nathan's memories & his reasons to continue living.
For me this novel was slightly disappointing - I had thought Yates' first novel, 'Leave myself behind' was excellent & I don't think the characters work as well this follow-up.
Engaging book - By: R. Johnston, 15 Jun 2008
Interesting read if at times difficult subject matter. I found myself reading the final chapters at 2am as I wanted to see how the story ended. I found my views of the central character Nathan fluctuating throughout the book but in the end I found myself feeling great sympathy for his moral plight. Well worth reading but not for those that want a happy conculsion.
The brothers bishop - By: Shana Banks, 17 Nov 2007
A sharply witty book full of dark humour, twists & turns that keep you glued page after page. It has an ambivalence to it that may challlenge some of your views or pre conceived ideas. The characters are engaging & beautifully drawn. I found myself disliking & loving the narrator in equal measure. The inevitable ending hurt though.
Moving - By: Jean Day, 12 Aug 2007
I don't think I've cried to much reading a book. It was so moving.
At first I was exactly consumed by the novel & it wasn't until the last couple of chapters that I was truly gripped. It's a fantastic piece of literature.
Another great read.... - By: Ricardo, 09 Jul 2007
Another of Bart Yates' works of art. Being the follow up to his excellent 'Leave Myself Behind' I was unsure how this book would read, but after the first page or two I knew this was going to be as addictive, thought provoking (& sometimes quite disturbing) funny & 'Real' as ever. I will definately be buying any future Bart Yates novels!!!!!!!!
