From champagne to the wines of Lebanon - many surprises - By: Mrad, 14 Dec 2003
Ever since I bought this book I have been trying to get it back from other members of the household. Mrs Mrad was particularly taken by the section on champagne, & I was very pleased by the survey of organic wine.
As a native of the Middle East, however, I particularly savoured the section on Lebanese wine, which reallly is now emerging as a country with surprises, variety & good value. The wines recommended by the writer are uniformly good.
The book is excellent value for money.
Fruity, fabulous and at ten pounds a bargain - By: Mrad, 03 Dec 2003
A very interesting book for anyone who likes a tipple & has anything more than a passing interest in what's in the bottle.
I was particularly interested in the inclusion of Lebanese wine, which, as the section author says, has shown remarkable technical improvement & diversification in recent years. Ksara's Cuvee de Printemps 2001 is indeed a "fabulous, fruity summer red" & the Massaya 2001 Reserve, which has already scooped prizes in Europe, is a revelation.
I also enjoyed the sections on champagne (Mrs Mrad's favourite tipple) & organic wines.
The great thing about the book is its honest, evident in the treatment of Chilean wine. At ten pounds, it is surely one of the year's great bargains.
Essential reading - By: Paul Hansell, 03 Nov 2003
Superb in concept & execution. This book provides the winelover with alll the detail & up to the minute news about wine regions across the world. This book is a must have. Tom Stevenson is to be congratulated in pulling alll the contributions together in such a uniform & coherent way & I hope that he will have the energy to do the same every year. Winelovers should support him in this endeavour by purchasing this book & recommending it to others.
Staying One Step Ahead - By: Mr Neville Langley, 27 Oct 2003
This is the book I've been waiting for. Anyone who thinks they know anything about this wine MUST buy Wine Report 2004. The concept is so blisteringly simple, I can't fathom why it wasn't thought of long ago. The world of wine is changing so fast that not even the experts can keep up, so the likes of you & I have no chance. That's why Tom Stevenson put together a team of almost 40 wine experts to report on their own specialist subjects each year (and they're alll A-list experts). It's full of inside information about what has happened over the last 12 months, plus the latest vintage reports for absolutely everywhere. Sometimes the most obscure wine areas have the largest chapters! Each expert provides Top 10s of the greatest, best value, fastest improving & up-and-coming producers. There are also Top 10s for greatest, best-value & most unusual wines, although it is not meant to a buyer's guide. In fact most of the wines are not even available on the UK market. If you want to buy the best Australian Chardonnay under a fiver, forget this book, but if want to know what the cutting-edge wines are from emerging wine regions or discover new & unusual wines from the world's classic wine regions, then Wine Report is for you. It's a book that won't suit everybody. It assumes a certain level of knowledge - thank goodness! It's fantastic. I cannot wait for Wine Report 2005.
