Fab. Absolutely fab. - By: M. Gledhill, 22 May 2007
I've tried a few books/audio CDs to teach myself German from scratch. Without doubt, the best two recommendations are this pack (to give you basic German phrases) & Michel Thomas' German course (to teach you how to use the language).
Each page has English phrases, then German phrases on the outer edge of the pages. The front & back covers have flaps to cover these German translations, making it an ideal way to test yourself.
Genius.
One (very big) complaint:
I don't know German, & each phrase is shown in English, German, then how to pronounce it in English (eg "Ich bin" -> "Eech binn") But, for some reason, the words with a's in them (eg "Das") are shown as being pronounced with a 'u' (eg "Duss")
For simple words, fair enough, you can work out the proper way to say the phrases (and listen to the CD, of course), but for longer phrases, this does make you mispronounce the words.
Maybe they're just saying the German with a funny accent.. I don't know.
Despite this, I love this pack, & would highly recommend it. (I also got the Hugo "German in 3 months" book & CD, & they're busy gathering dust..!!)
